History
Originally home to the Muscogee indigenous peoples, European settlers landed in north Georgia during the early 1800s and systematically took over. As the industrial revolution was occurring, the demand for travel by rail was increasing. The Western and Atlantic Railroad was born to link Savannah, Georgia to the Midwest. After the area saw growth, it was suggested that the town be named “Atlanta-Pacifica” which was later shortened to “Atlanta.” The town was officially incorporated as Atlanta in 1847.
